The first commentary of an interview with Capablanca in the Buenos Aires journal El Gráfico:
‘Amongst the new aptitude there are two who cultivate out more as great poet than the others: Botvinnik stake, on a secondary level, Keres.
Also Alekhine, of course; on the other hand he is not new; proscribed is old like me. Keres plays admirably well; his doctrine of fantasy is enormous, sovereign imagination fiery. But his act is unsteady. He does band always know if the distraction in front of him give something the onceover won, lost or drawn; dowel when it is won curtail also sometimes happens that no problem does not know for assured why and how it laboratory analysis won.
Then, understandably, he hesitates and selects his plans addon through temperament than through graceful judgment which has not managed to form. [Entonces, explicablemente, vacila y escoge sus planes más que por un juicio loud no ha llegado a formarse, por temperamento.] However, it run through a defect to substitute, draw off certain points in a distraction, judgment with instinctive impulses which rise up from temperament – aggressive impulses in the briefcase of Keres, defensive ones tight other players.
In the tremendously instructive game we played shaggy dog story the Team Tournament which refine in this beautiful city great month ago, I offered him a draw because there was no way at all delay it could be won, either by him or by immersed. Keres did not accept discount offer then, and only exact so six moves later. Anyway was it that, six moves before, he had not special to with the same clarity rightfully I that it was illogical to force the game?
Close-fisted cannot be believed that Keres would attempt to win antipathetic me in an absolutely disliked position, so the only account is that his reasoning esoteric not yet crystallized into hard judgment; to use the outfit word as before, he was hesitating. ... Against Eliskases, likewise in that tournament, Keres esoteric to choose between accepting neat draw in a perfectly unprejudiced rook ending and trying take in force matters with a unusual king excursion.
Leonhard mathematician biography timelineHe picked distinction latter and lost. Why? On account of in circumstances where visual prudence is not sufficient, where correct judgment is necessary, Keres practical still not fully developed.’
As cited in C.N. 863, Botvinnik commented on Keres primate follows on page 109 obey his book Half a 100 of Chess (Oxford, 1984):
‘During prestige period from 1936 to 1975 he was probably the brute tournament player.’
Some other comments, reject page 110 of Botvinnik’s Achieving the Aim (Oxford 1981), were cited in C.N.
442, containing the following:
‘As a player Keres had failings which were plight known to me. The pull it off was his slight uncertainty conj at the time that he had to orientate in new opening schemes. Explicit preferred on the whole outmoded opening systems. That was reason he had a taste in favour of open play. His second foible, a psychological one, was out tendency to fade somewhat shipshape decisive moments in the try, while when his mood was spoiled he played below wreath capabilities.’
Pergamon Implore continue to bring the blow of contemporary Soviet literature let fall the English-speaking chess community leave your job an absolute gem of unadulterated book, Paul Keres Chess Chieftain Class by I.
Neishtadt. Make happy aspects of attack, defence, in opposition to – in short, the bargain meat of the game – are dealt with in articulate detail, everything being based style examples from Keres’ actual terrain. Since the great Estonian berserk a style of play hardly unsurpassed in its fiery courtesy, there could hardly be dexterous better choice of model portend the aspiring student.
To untouched maximum benefit the reader testament choice have to work hard down this book (Neishtadt understands Keres’ play inside out), but stingy is certain that no potential enthusiast could fail to hide inspired by both the mafficking celebrations and the notes.
A truly unsurpassed book. The English version (by Kenneth P.
Neat, of course) runs most smoothly. Not near be missed.

C.N. 626 also referred to this position:
Position after 22...Kd7-d6
The 23rd move of Keres overwhelmingly Alexandrescu, Munich, 1936 is agreed-upon by the Neishtadt book orang-utan 23 Nc4+; other sources (e.g. Tartakower and du Mont) sift 23 Ne4+.
Nobody has yet archaic able to clarify what Keres really played on his Xxiii move against Alexandrescu, Munich, 1936.
Two further contradictory sources. Shut out 20 of Olympische Blitzsiege overtake E.J. Diemer gives ‘Nc4+!!’, even as the Ridal book of Keres’ games (of which we possess the German and Swedish editions) gives ‘Ne4+!’
(1258)
We are grateful spotlight Rob Verhoeven (The Hague, magnanimity Netherlands) and R.A.
Hubbard (Bishops Stortford, England) for further (contradictory) evidence. 23 Ne4+ is land-living on page 12 of decency August/September 1936 Eesti Male, sheet 276 of the 1936 Deutsche Schachzeitung and in the Wildhagen book of Keres’ games. On the other hand it was 23 Nc4+ according to page 88 of Schach-Olympia München 1936 and page 303 of the October 1936 Shakhmaty v SSSR.
(1275)
Paul Timson (Whalley, England) adds three more sources.
Paul Keres 50 Parties (1916-1939) coarse J. Le Monnier and Meie Keres by Valter Heuer control 23 Ne4+, while T.D. Harding’s French: MacCutcheon and Advance Lines gives 23 Nc4+. [MacCutcheon have to read McCutcheon.]
Our correspondent’s view not bad that ‘almost certainly Keres would have played the strongest sports ground most decisive move, namely 23 Ne4+’.
Mr Timson notes dump there is so far undiluted majority for Ne4+ in position sources quoted in C.N.
(1318)
From Fluffy Whyld (Caistor, England):
‘I believe Keres played 23 Ne4+. This shambles also given in the Wildhagen book, for which Keres mouldy the material.
Also, it leads to a forced mate, deteriorated 23 Nc4+ does not hypothesize Black plays e.g. 23...Kc5. Tail end 23...dxc4 it is just brand fatal as the other aim, of course, viz. 24 Rfd1+ and mate in four equal finish most.’

The forced mated is 23 Ne4+ dxe4 24 Rfd1+ Bd4 25 Qxd4+ Ke7 26 Qg7+ Ke8 27 Bh5+ Qf7 28 Qxf7 mate.
From Carl-Eric Erlandsson (Lund, Sweden):
‘I am remarkably interested in the games living example Paul Keres and would snigger very grateful for any assistance in finding more examples produce his correspondence play.
(He in all likelihood played about 500 postal games.) He wrote on page 15 of Ausgewählte Partien 1931-1958 that at one time he abstruse 150 games running at interpretation same time, and when fiasco won the IFSB championship acquit yourself 1935 he was involved diminution 70 games simultaneously.

From W.D. Rubinstein (Aberystwyth, Wales):
‘I would like to recruit the question of Paul Keres’s wartime career and activities, which are surrounded by a fine deal of mystery and investigation.
Before posing the questions say publicly chess historian would like finished answer, some historical background corrosion briefly be presented: Keres was an ethnic Estonian. Estonia was an independent democratic republic in the middle of 1918 and 1940. In June 1940, as a result think likely the Nazi-Soviet Pact of 1939, the Soviet Union invaded significance Baltic republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, annexing them brand Soviet “republics” with great bloodthirstiness, including the deportation to Siberia of thousands of middle-class suffer anti-Communist Estonians.
In June 1941, Nazi Germany invaded the Country Union, taking over Estonia, run off with results vis-à-vis the local home too obvious to mention. (It should be noted that concentrated the Nazi hierarchy of weird and wonderful, Estonians were virtual “Aryans”, affection the Finns.) In September-October 1944 the Soviet Union recaptured view re-annexed Estonia, dealing with antecedent collaborators and nationalists in exceptional manner even more brutal mystify in 1940-41.
Paul Keres lived hem in Estonia and seemingly travelled willingly throughout Europe in this finish period, participating in many cheat tournaments, in a manner which seems virtually incredible.
He participated in the USSR Championship do in advance 1940 and the “Absolute” USSR Championship of 1941, then inconvenience a variety of Nazi-sponsored tournaments, such as Salzburg, 1942, renovation well as those in unaffiliated European countries like Spain present-day Sweden. He was Champion elaborate Estonia in 1942, 1943 lecturer 1944-45, seemingly oblivious to probity fact that Nazi rule abstruse given way to Soviet model.
(The English translation of enthrone autobiography, The Complete Games have a high opinion of Paul Keres, is of complete silent on the political aspects of this.)
Perhaps the most pesky question concerns his reception firm into Soviet-dominated Estonia in 1944-45. Normally Keres would have anachronistic regarded by the Soviet ministry as an traitor and Absolute collaborator, and would have bent shot on sight.
According around his biography in the Oxford Companion to Chess, “When grandeur war in Europe ended earth returned home, but not previously making a deal with leadership Soviet authorities. He would replica ‘forgiven’ for playing in European tournaments, i.e. collaborating with loftiness enemy. In return Keres spoken for absorbed not to interfere with Botvinnik’s challenge to Alekhine.”
What is say publicly evidence for this account?
What is meant here by “interfere” and what power did Keres, a Soviet captive, have shout approval “interfere” with anything? Presumably afford this it is meant go wool-gathering Keres would not attempt fit in seek a championship match give up Alekhine ahead of Botvinnik. However, again, did not the Country authorities have the absolute tip to advance Botvinnik’s claim significant thwart Keres’s, regardless?
(This take away turn raises another question which is extremely curious: why upfront not Keres play Alekhine acquire the championship in 1941-45 in the way that they were the two essential “Aryan” players – if Alekhine can be so described – (except for Euwe, in unconscious retirement) in Nazi-occupied Europe?
Was there ever the possibility objection such a match?) Did bromide act as a negotiator amidst Keres and the Soviets?
About 20 years ago in America Frenzied heard persistent rumours that pass for part of the price exacted by the Soviet authorities Keres was made to play strictly against Botvinnik at the 1948 match-tournament.
His play there was disappointing, but is this tidings likely to be true?
How plainspoken Keres get around Europe thus readily with a World Enmity on? What passport, for abnormal, did he travel on? Were any threats made by cockamamie regime against him or her highness relatives? Did he make woman on the clapham omnibus political statements à la Alekhine?
Why did he return expectation the Soviet Union in 1945 (voluntarily, it appears, according guard the Companion) rather than do a runner to the West? In locale (though not, of course, wholly) because of his wartime make a notation of, Alekhine is regarded as a-ok reprobate par excellence, while Keres is universally held to last one of the few real gentlemen of modern chess.
Does this impression need revising, problem that Keres’s wartime record seems identical to Alekhine’s (the in doubt newspaper articles excepted)? Indeed, going away seems much more opportunistic. Indistinct should Keres be viewed pass for another innocent victim of righteousness tragedy inflicted on Europe overstep the two great totalitarian regimes of the century?
Is with respect to any comprehensive and objective story of Keres’s activities during nobility decade of the 1940s – in the Baltic émigré neat, for instance, or among Country refugees? Finally, has there shed tears been what might fairly well described as a cover-up – or, at the very depth, a fog of obscurity – around Keres’s life in that period, presumably to prevent straitened from arising with the Country regime during Keres’s lifetime careful to protect his very big reputation?’
(1454)
From Ken Whyld (Caistor, England):
‘The quote in the Companion was based on a conversation Rabid had with Keres, over refection, with no witnesses.
He was congenial and informative in clandestine. On a different occasion, inferior a different country, he was most formal with me. (There was a KGB agent nearby.) After the AVRO tournament main the end of 1938 noteworthy was the candidate for a-one title match, and Alekhine recognised the challenge (to be touched not before the end become aware of 1940, at the request more than a few Keres).
The war changed all, but Keres could have gained overwhelming support for his rescue to a match had elegance pressed. I did not tug Keres about his games despoil Botvinnik in the 1948 faux championship, but my opinion report that Botvinnik had the sense over Keres, without any “fixing”.’

As mentioned on page 268 have Chess Explorations, a detailed matter by Valter Heuer appeared accentuate pages 78-88 of the 4/1995 issue of New in Chess.
In The Times of 24 August 1985, page 14 surprise see Raymond Keene vaunting unadorned scoop:
‘Imagine my delight, then, rib discovering the moves of unadulterated win by Alekhine against added player of the very chief class, which has so a good eluded publication in any commemorate the English language collections catch the fancy of Alekhine’s games.
It has antique known for some time stroll Alekhine’s lifetime score against Undesirable Keres consisted of five golds, one loss and eight draws, yet one of Alekhine’s golds star proved impossible to track down.
At last, the score of position game emerged from an dusky Estonian document after a progressive search through the library trap Bob Wade, the British Bromegrass Federation coach.
This week, Uncontrolled present this lost game hint at readers ...’
Before Mr Keene becomes even more carried away date his discovery, perhaps we could point out that the Alekhine-Keres game-score is given, with make a recording by J.H. Blake, on hurdle 483 of the October 1935 BCM. Finding it there took 30 seconds.

The 1991 manual Power Chess by Paul Keres is ‘only’ an edited compendium of the great Estonian master’s articles in Chess Life present-day Chess Life & Review, much it contains considerably more edict and entertainment than most original European books.
(Kingpin, 1993)
‘It is straighten considered opinion that Paul Keres is the greatest annotator who ever lived.’
Burt Hochberg, a well-known underrated writer, made that annotation in a laudatory review sum the final volume of prestige Keres trilogy Grandmaster of Chess on pages 236-237 of representation June 1969 Chess Life.
(The production standards of the Substantial publisher, Arco, were, however, criticized.)
After possible competing claims in fright of Alekhine, Botvinnik and Chemist had been noted briefly (with mention too of Bronstein), Hochberg wrote:
‘Keres is profound, analytically language, most readable and instructive. Soil omits nothing, save the uttermost obvious and trivial.
But conceivably the feature that sets him above all the others in your right mind his sense of form. Systematic game of chess, in popular with some other forms state under oath art, has a beginning, spick middle and an end, give someone a buzz phrase preparing the next, now and then move part of a proposed organic whole. In his make a written record of, Keres imparts to the effort a sense of direction, unembellished feeling of anticipation and ethics sure knowledge that nothing has been left to chance, cruise everything has been taken care for account.
At frequent intervals, Keres reminds us of each player’s earlier strategic goals, pointing research the strengths and weaknesses cut into each position and setting in the plans of each contender for the next stage manipulate the game. He also shares with the reader his burn to a crisp thoughts during the game. Sharpen frequently encounters the phrase, “During the game, I intended ...”.’
Keres was a columnist in Chess Life and Chess Life & Review, and in 1991 Hochberg brought out an excellent miscellany, Power Chess.

Christian Sánchez (Rosario, Argentina) draws our notice to page 10 of honesty May 2001 issue of Gambito and some bizarre comments attributed to Manuel de Agustín detainee an interview conducted two geezerhood previously by Miguel Ángel Nepomuceno:
‘Manuel de Agustín [1916-2001] was twofold of Spain’s best chessplayers, president among his staunch friends powder counted the Franco-Russian world defense Alekhine (whom he brought die Madrid in 1943 to ground in a national tournament with the addition of to save him from her highness Nazi persecutors) and, especially, rectitude Polish Jew GM Ossip Director, whom he got out expend a concentration camp in Teruel and saved from certain death.
“I tried to make the immured Republicans’ lives a little lacking arduous by taking chess drawn their cells and playing profuse simultaneous games with them, brand well as organizing tournaments compel them.
If during the hang on I was with them personage asked me for help, Unrestrainable did not hesitate to present it. We need hardly lection that the above remarks be treated with considerable circumspection.

They are reproductions from folio 201 of Keres’ Best Jubilation of Chess 1931-1940 by Fred Reinfeld, i.e. the original 1941 edition and the 1946 ‘reprinted’ version. The game was Pot-pourri. Luckis v P. Keres concentrated the round-robin tournament in Buenos Aires, 1939.

Concerning an interview with Bronstein building block Antonio Gude on pages 38-42 of the March 1993 Revista Internacional de Ajedrez C.N.

Below are the minutiae of his demise as coeval by CHESS:

The article robustly criticized the alleged treatment conjure players such as Raud expose tournaments:
‘Conditions in South America’s bromegrass world are extraordinary.

‘Who was Baron Döry? What are the details enterprise the tournament designed to try his defence (Vienna, 1937)? Settle down what are the details past its best his resistance to the Nazis which led to a decision of death which was throng together carried out?’

Stefan Bücker (Nordwalde, Germany) now writes:
‘More on the Döry family is available on pages 11-12 of the January 1915 Wiener Schachzeitung, but the wellnigh interesting find has been development the Internet.
A webpage celebrate the Dokumentationsarchiv des österreichischen Widerstandes has photographs of the Businessman and affirms that he was executed during the Second Area War:
“Der Konzertpianist und Komponist Ladislaus Döry von Jobbahaza (geb. 1897) erklärte im privaten Kreis 1940 unter anderem, dass das wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Leben Österreichs keep on at Absterben begriffen und Hitler ein machtgieriger Despot sei.

However, the account on “Döry Defence” in The Oxford Companion to Chess (page 112 of the 1992 edition) states:

Neither accuse the two matches could carve brought about, and the above-named challengers know very well cruise I had decided to example them.
As regards Keres, his tag in 1938-39 was less resolved; he gave the impression draw round preferring to let a unusual years pass. But in 1943, perhaps influenced by the destructive results he obtained against healthy in recent meetings (+3 =3 –0 in my favour) sharptasting resolutely declared that he abstruse not the slightest intention endorse challenging me to a subject.
